What Is RSS?

What Is RSS? What Is RSS?
RSS Feeds

RSS, known most commonly as Really Simple Syndication, is an industry standard way of sharing regular website updates such as BLOGS, news and events, or even multimedia podcasts. It's been a feature of many large websites for quite a while, even before many of the social networking sites we now commonly know of existed, and is a simple yet very effective means of allowing users to anonymously stay up to date with these regularly updated listings without the need to continually visit a website  to do so.

RSS is both free and anonymous, so you will not need to subscribe using your e-mail adress, nor will you have to register or be part of any social networking services either. RSS feeds are instead subscribed to via RSS ready software. These capabilities are quite often now included within your web browser and e-mail programs already, and may even be linked in with many personal websites or social networking portals. You may even be surprised to know that many mobile phones and personal organisers or tablets have a number of RSS feed software / apps which you can install and use to follow your favourite RSS feeds on the road from your mobile device.

What you see when you receive your RSS updates is very much like the latest news listing you see on our home page, just depending on the product or app you are using. Some may even show you your updates as a form of e-mail style inbox, which you can open and read as you get the time.

RSS subscriptions can be easily removed at any time as well, as it's all controlled at your client end. Should you decide that you no longer wish to receive updates, then you simply select and remove that subscripton from within your RSS feed program and that is that, you are now unsubscribed. No sending unsubscribe e-mails or logging into websites to change your preferences, it's all anonymous and controlled at your end, so we don't even know when you have subscribed or ubsubscribed.

Which RSS Client Should You Use?

Which RSS Client Should You Use? Which RSS Client Should You Use?

Unfortunately we can't really recommend any one particular product, since there are many of them and each persons' own requirements will vary. There are however many products available  which you can use for free, and some probably already installed on your computer system or mobile device as well.

So quite often you will find that by simply clicking on the subscribe link  provided above your web browser will provide you with a list of options it knows are already available for you on your computer  system or mobile device, and you can then select the one from that list that you would like to use.

If none of the options already available on your computer suit your needs, then a quick search on the Internet for RSS feed readers should provide you with a list of potential alternatives to explore and try. You might also wish to visit about.com's page on RSS feed readers as a starting point to help find some common free alternatives as well.

If unsure, then your best bet should you be using a computer system is to have a chat with your local computer store, technical support agent, or web designer and just ask them what they would recommend for your needs. If you wish to use a mobile or tablet device to receive your updates, then have a chat with your local telecommunications (mobile phone) store or web developer and just see what apps they might recommend to best suit your particular mobile device.
